Thelander PC Digest: May 2023
How Should You Customize Private Company Compensation Data?
When examining compensation data for privately held companies – you want to make sure you are using an apple to apple comparison. Meaning? Private company instead of public.
Now that we’ve established a baseline – the next question is, what filters really make a difference? The Thelander platform allows you to easily customize private company data by five filters including: total amount of financing, region, revenue, and company valuation. Plus, the data is real-time and the tables are interactive.
In order to explain which filters truly make a difference in compensation, we break it down by examining data for a chief scientific officer. The two charts below customize the data by total amount of financing vs company valuation.

By examining the data above, below are takeaways:
Total Amount of Financing
Total amount of financing makes the biggest impact in the mix of cash and non-founder equity. As the total amount of financing increases from under $15 Million to $90 Million+, we see the 75%ile for total cash steadily increase from $296,250 to $449,166. We also see the non-founder equity decrease from 4.1875% to 1.8427%.
Valuation
The compensation trend is similar to the amount of financing – as valuation increases, the total cash increases and the non-founder equity decreases.
Revenue
Revenue is trickier, since 65% of the private companies in our dataset have no revenue or under $5 million in revenue.
Region
You pay top dollar for top talent. There are multiple ways you can accommodate for a higher cost of living in addition to utilizing the region filter.
Industry
We have seen industry make less of a difference in compensation, since talent moves across tech and life sciences.
As you can see, there are many ways to look at data. Thus, you need a robust and comprehensive dataset that focuses on the private capital markets so you can make accurate comparisons. Thelander’s compensation data gives you the insights and analysis you need to make educated compensation related decisions for your entire organization.
