Thelander CVC Digest: June 2024
Insights into CVC Compensation: Webinar Recording
Welcome back to the Thelander Digest for June. This month, we wanted to share our webinar recording from May in case you missed it, as well as some exclusive data that was presented by Jody Thelander, our founder & CEO. Jody was joined by industry experts James Fischer, Corporate Partner at DLA Piper and Sue Siegel, Chairman, Board of Directors, The Engine, to discuss current trends and share first hand insights and expertise.
The webinar dives into how CVCs compensate their employees based on the structure of their CVC unit, whether off balance, a separate legal entity or a hybrid of multiple structures and strategies.

Overall, the data shows a clear connection between the level of independence a CVC firm has and the way it compensates and incentivizes employees.
The webinar also touches on the benefits of incentive and why some are better than others. To summarize, corporate stock can be a valuable lever for employees because the vesting period is typically three to four years and is paid our every quarter and with additional payouts every quarter after that. This is much shorter than the typical vesting period for carried interest, which has increased towards 10 years on average.

These topics and more are covered in depth by Jody, James and Sue who all bring a unique perspective to the table about how CVCs are structured, how that impacts compensation and what factors you should considering when determining how to pay and incentivize employees.
As we enter the second half of the year, it is a great time to assess how your CVC Unit is stacking up. Have you had turnover? Are there open positions? CVCs are an active part of the investment firm ecosystem and there is competition for talent at every level. To see how your compensation compares to market, we invite you to take less than 20 minutes to participate in the no-charge Thelander CVC Compensation Survey.
