Investor relations has become a strategic role at investment firms, and Director of Investor Relations compensation is starting to reflect it. As fundraising and exits take longer, Directors of IR sit at the intersection of capital raising, LP communication and firm reputation. So, does the compensation data reflect that growing responsibility?

At firms with less than $1 Billion in total AUM –

  • Median total cash rose from $172,000 (2023) to $202,000 (2025) while carried interest stayed steady at 1.00%
  • The 75th %ile total cash climbed from $235,000 to $286,500, with carried interest declining from a high of 3.00% before leveling off at 1.75% over the same period

At firms with more than $1 Billion AUM, total cash decreased at both the median and 75th.

What’s the bottom line? At firms under $1 Billion AUM, total cash for Directors of IR is climbing—up $30,000 at the median since 2023 and more than $50,000 at the 75th percentile—while firms over $1 Billion AUM have moved the other way, with cash declining at both the median and 75th. Carried interest stays steady throughout, a sign that IR is still compensated primarily as a cash role rather than a carry-earning one.
