Long Term Incentives at CVC Units

In this month’s CVC Digest, we are revisiting one of our most popular newsletters to see how the data has changed.

The Three Year Shift in Long Term Incentives

Over the past three years:

  • Corporate stock and carried interest have become more popular since 2024
  • Shadow/phantom/synthetic (SPS) carry has become less popular YoY
  • Combinations of corporate stock and either true carry or SPS carry have also become less popular YoY

Does incentive structure impact median total cash for CVC Unit Leaders?

What additional incentives are used also impacts how much cash an investment professional receives, although not necessarily in the way you’d think. For CVC Unit Leaders:

  • Median total cash is lowest for those at units with no additional incentives or who are ineligible for them
  • Median total cash is highest at units where some combination of corporate stock and either SPS or true carry is granted

This suggests that more competitive units, or those that operate more like traditional VC firms, tend to offer both higher cash and additional incentives, while units who are not as focused on financial returns have lower cash compensation even without additional incentives layered on.

What happens at the 75th percentile?

When we look at the 75th percentile in total cash for CVC Unit Leaders, we see that there’s a similar story.Only CVC Unit Leaders receiving true carry, or a combination of corporate stock and some form of carry, see cash compensation that stands out from peers without additional incentives. What’s the bottom line? Carried interest, whether standalone or combined with corporate stock, continues to correlate with stronger cash compensation for CVC Unit Leaders, reinforcing that units competing most aggressively for talent are moving toward VC-style incentive structures.
